Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!

This week the topic was top cover trends we disliked or liked. I am all about covers. Glossy, matte, shiny pretty covers — I am all over it. There are tons of things I love about covers. I couldn’t narrow what I liked to certain trends but there was one thing that popped into my head that I don’t like about covers. So, I’m just going to show 10 examples of this one trend. Keep in mind, some of the books I include I ADORE but I just don’t like this trend. Or maybe it’s just overdone.

Close up of a couple kissing, almost kissing, staring deep into each other’s eyes, breathing each other’s space… you get the idea.

I think it’s just done way too much that it seems generic. I skimmed through my Goodreads shelves and am showing the 10 examples I came across.

What about you guys? Do you think this trend is over done? Or maybe it’s a trend you like? Tell me your favorite or least favorite trends!

  1. I so agree! Every time I see a cover like this, it just tells me that it’s going to be a generic romance, probably some relationship drama or a dangerous situation. These covers just don’t say anything beyond “hot people hook up in this book.”

  2. I agree, the almost kissing couple has become generic. It seems to be the template for most New Adult books and many romances.

  3. the one that irks me with this trend is when the covers use the same images as other covers!! It’s so weird to me and I find that happens in this cover trend the most!!

    Great post & picks!

  4. I completely agree with you. And you didn’t feature one Nicolas Sparks book, and mostly all his follow that trend, so think about how many more are out there. Scary. People need to stop doing this though. You used some great examples, Wendy!

  5. I do love these covers but I agree this trend is getting out of hand lol. I also agree with Jaime on the same images (the stock photos). The author needs to make sure their book stands out because there have been times when I thought I had the book already but then later realized it was just the same photos.

  6. So, random. Kyle and I were talking about remaking some of the kissing covers because they are SO CHEESY! lol

Anyway. I am tired of this trend too.

  7. Ugh I don’t like this almost kissing/kissing/swoony trend either, it just seems so terribly overused, it’s hard to tell any of these books apart. o_O Sure some are done better than others but as a whole, I hope they get rid of this trend soon! Great pick ^^
