The king's scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king's prison. The magus is interested only in the thief's abilities.

What Gen is interested in is anyone's guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Sound:

When I saw that this series was going to be narrated by Steve West, I requested it asap! Steve West is one of my all time favorite narrators! He just does such a fantastic job not only with inflections but bringing each character to life. I am never lost in the dialogue. I think his narration adds another layer to the story. On top of all that, his voice is just so soothing to listen to!

The Story:

I didn’t know much about this series going into it! I knew it had some big fans, and I knew that the series started a long time ago and it was a big deal that the latest book finally came out. That was about it! Anyway, as the story unfolds from Eugenides POV, I was quickly pulled into the world.

Eugenides is a thief, and a great one at that, and he is tasked with helping to steal some item. He gets dragged on this journey with  what seems to be a bit of a rag tag team. I really enjoyed learning more about each of the characters on their trip and also getting stories of the gods in this fantasy world. It was a little slow going at first but the pace definitely picked up and there are some seriously fantastic twists and things I just did not expect.

I appreciated how well developed the characters were and how I came to have a connection with each of them. There is also a lot of political intrigue that comes into play and it’s super interesting to follow. The book definitely left off with me eager to start the next, wondering what else was in store in this world!

My Rating:

Have you read this series before? What did you think? If not, I highly recommend the audio! Steve West’s voice is amazing!

  1. The Queen’s Thief series is one of my favorites!!! I love those books even more than the Red Rising trilogy, if you can believe it. 😉 As good as The Thief is, the next two books are significantly better. If you think the characterization, political intrigue and twists/turns are great now, just wait. 😀

I’ve always been curious about what the audiobook version of this story might be like; I’m excited to track it down now!

    • Steve West is seriously one of my FAVORITE audio narrators ever, he does a fantastic job!! Definitely check it out, I hope you enjoy it on audio!

  2. I read this book a long time ago, like in high school, and don’t remember anything except enjoying it! I definitely need to reread so I can continue with the series. And yay your favorite narrator! That’s awesome 🙂
