There might be no such a thing as a perfect guy, but Xavier Rush comes disastrously close. A gorgeous veterinarian giving Greek god vibes—all while cuddling a tiny kitten? Immediately yes. That is until Xavier opens his mouth and proves that even sculpted gods can say the absolute wrong thing. Like, really wrong. Of course, there’s nothing Samantha loves more than proving an asshole wrong…
. . . unless, of course, he can admit he made a mistake. But after one incredible and seemingly endless date—possibly the best in living history—Samantha is forced to admit the truth, that her family is in crisis and any kind of relationship would be impossible. Samantha begs Xavier to forget her. To remember their night together as a perfect moment, as crushing as that may be.
Only no amount of distance or time is nearly enough to forget that something between them. And the only thing better than one single perfect memory is to make a life—and even a love—worth remembering.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Why Did I Read?

It’s Abby Jimenez! Of course I was going to read it!

My Thoughts:

I think I would describe this book as being pulled into two wonderful people’s lives and then being swept along on their love story. Abby has a way with words and a way of creating characters and situations that are so real. I won’t soon forget Xavier and Samantha and I don’t want to.

Samantha and Xavier meet right before Samantha moves across the country and right before some pretty big life changes for Samantha. It’s not ideal but life is unpredictable. Abby always is a pro at writing characters that make you feel like you know them in real life. She is so good at immersing you into their lives. I was so invested in each of their lives. I read this in the span of a weekend because I could not put it down!

This is her most serious book, Abby has even said as much as well, and I actually don’t think I would’ve read it if it wasn’t from her. I typically read romance as an escape and I don’t want to be sad. But this is probably my second fave Abby book. She deals with some pretty hefty issues: dementia, memory loss, death, family dynamics, long distance relationships. Abby navigates all of the heavy issues so well though, and weaves in trademark humor and laugh out loud moments which balance the subject matter. Like I said, sometimes I tend to shy away from the heavier reads but while I shed tears reading this, I also smiled and laughed.

I have the smallest of complaints and this only comes from being someone in the healthcare field and also owning my own practice. I FELT Xavier’s struggles to my core, like I understand you all too well. But the solution to that particular issue was way too unrealistically solved, wrapped with a tidy bow and I couldn’t help but be like, yeah that would never happen in real life. However, I understand this is a book and I ignored it to enjoy the story.

In Short:

Another winner from Abby Jimenez! A wonderful story featuring a family I came to love, a great discussion of life and love and memories, and an immersive love story. I loved Samantha’s snark and Xavier’s caring heart. I won’t soon forget these two.
