Cafe Chat: Seasonal Genre Reading

It’s been ages since a cafe chat post! I mean… literally, ages. I think it’s just due to the fact I’ve had so much less time writing blog posts! It makes me sad but I AM actively working on making time for that! 🙂

Anyway, gather round, grab that mug of whatever you want to drink while we chat (or maybe a cold glass instead given the topic?) Today I wanted to talk about seasonal genre reading! I don’t know about the rest of you, but here in the pacific NW we are finally getting that spring weather that’s hinting at summer! I mean, yeah, it did rain this morning but we’ve had consecutive days of sun too! Consecutive days of 70s some weather! Woo!

The warming weather got me thinking about my massive TBR and every year when the weather warms, it doesn’t matter what had been on my immediate TBR, I immediately want to switch gears and veer toward those contemporaries. I’m not exactly sure what it is about the sun and summer but it screams contemporary. The cute, the fluffy, the fun– all of it.

One of my theories is that the concept of summer makes me think of high school since the only time I really had a true “summer break” was during that time. And so it makes me want to read the realistic YA contemporaries vs a heavier high fantasy for instance (even if fantasy is my favorite genre).

Another theory is that when you’re wanting to read something outside in the sun, you don’t want to think too hard (fantasy names can be tough to remember and keep straight) and just want something light and fun that you can enjoy! Because for me, if I’m reading outside sooner or later I get uncomfortable and want to get up and move around and contemporaries are easier to put down and pick back up!

These are my two working theories. Do you find yourself veering toward certain genres during certain seasons? Do you head straight for those contemporaries too now that it’s warming up? Do tell me which ones are on your list!

Here are the ones on my immediate seasonal contemporary list!

Do you tend to read certain genres during particular seasons? Do you veer toward those contemps during the summer like me? Let me know which ones you plan to read this summer! Have you read any of the ones on my immediate contemporary TBR?

  1. I am soooo with you on this. My TBR / mood completely changes in the summer months. I especially love reading summer YA books set in a beach town. I try to keep track of them with a Goodreads shelf so I know exactly what to pull from. I just like something light and easy for my beach reads! Sitting outside in the sun is my favorite place to read and I need something I can breezily read, since fantasy takes more effort and concentration for me.
