Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that—but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once . . .

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Why Did I Read?

Jill Shalvis is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors! She writes the best romances and I love the Heartbreaker Bay series too! I couldn’t wait to read about Lucas and Molly!

My Thoughts:

The Heartbreaker Bay books are fantastic — they have the perfect blend of romance, friendships, and riveting storyline. The latest installment in the series is no different! In Hot Winter Nights, Lucas and Molly are thrown together on a case that Archer (head of the special investigations company they both work for) does not want to take. Molly wants to prove to everyone, including her overprotective brother, that she is strong and smart and can handle herself, and Lucas is under instructions from his boss Archer to watch Molly’s back. As you can imagine… shenanigans ensue.

Firstly, both Molly and Lucas have a lot of things from their pasts to unpack and they were the perfect person for the other to finally open themselves up to. Lucas doesn’t want to lose anyone close to him anymore and Molly knows that loving someone just doesn’t end well for her. As they both investigate a sketchy Santa business that may be withholding money from their hardworking elf employees, they realize that letting someone in may not be so bad.

I loved Lucas and his family and seeing him start to care for Molly. I also absolutely enjoyed Molly – she is such an independent badass and she isn’t afraid to go after what she wants in her career. Having glimpsed a bit of her from Joe’s story About That Kiss, I had been eager to see more of her and she is so my favorite.

I thought Lucas and Molly had amazing chemistry and loved seeing their friends make an appearance in their story too. All of the friendships are so unique and special and I loved their interactions. They are all such a close knit bunch and while this can absolutely be read as a standalone, I think reading all of the books in the series give you this other layer to the story! It makes me happy to continue to glimpse other characters I love.

In Short…

Jill Shalvis remains my go-to for contemporary romance! Her stories just make me happy and her Heartbreaker Bay books are definitely a must read for the upcoming holiday season!

My Rating:  1/2
