Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

The first line of a book can be so important! It’s like the first impression when you meet someone new. It sets the tone for the rest of the book. These are some of my favorite first lines because they capture your attention right away and make you want to find out why. These lines pull you in and you need to keep on reading because that one line both piqued your curiosity and intrigued you. I love these books and these lines! Have you read any of these?

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater | Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor | Timekeeper by Tara Sim | The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater | Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling | Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor | Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman | The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

What are your favorite opening lines?

  1. I love the opening line from Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn

To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband’s dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor

I loved this post. You picked some fabulous first lines, especially the one from Daughter of Smoke and Bone!

    My TTT .

  3. I’m surprised that I recognized most of these, despite only having read Illuminae and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. (And maybe Ella Enchanted?) It goes to show that first lines can be pretty telling of a book and can be very distinct. Personally I’ll always love “It was a dark and stormy night.” as used in A Wrinkle in Time, for the sake of cliches, but as far as first lines go though, I honestly can’t ever remember any. All the ones you chose are such great ones though!
