Monthly Recap: May 2020 / A Crazy Running Challenge, More Baking, Return to Work

Posted June 15, 2020 by Wendy in Personal, recap / 2 Comments

I know, I know. It’s halfway through June and I’m just now posting my May recap! Apparently this is what happens when I go back to full time work. πŸ™

Anyway, May was not terrible and there were a few bright spots amidst the trash fire that is the year 2020. I participated in my own ultra running challenge – the Yeti 24 Hour Ultra Running challenge where I ran 5 miles every four hours for 24 hours! Then… because 30 miles is so damn close to a 50K (31.1 miles), I tacked on that extra 1.1 miles to get there. Runners are crazy, I know! It’s totally true. πŸ˜› Full recap + tips about that running challenge experience to come later this week! Watch for that for all the fun nitty-gritty details!

Ube waffle with ube ice cream, blueberry banana mini muffins, flourless chocolate torte with raspberry sauce, cashew chicken and broccoli!

I tried to take advantage of the last bits of my non-work time by doing as much baking/cooking as I could. I’m sure my husband enjoyed the last bits of nice breakfasts during the weekdays before I went back, ha. So long bagel bites, blueberry banana muffins and oatmeal bakes! Just kidding, I still try and have one fun breakfast on Sundays after my long runs. He’s actually been joining me for them which is really exciting.

It was also my 7th blogaversary in May! As infrequent as my blogging is nowadays, I still love it and was excited about this milestone πŸ™‚

quick snapshot of some April and May additions to the shelf!

I really went a little nuts with book buying during quarantine. I just want to support all the authors and indie bookstores and all the things and got a liiittle carried away. I probably bought more books during this time than I did all of last year? Also, in the last week or so (technically in June), I bought more books to support Black authors and Black owned indie bookstores and can’t wait to get them! I am excited about these new additions to my shelves and also am thankful I have the ability to put money toward supporting creators and causes I feel so strongly about. Have you noticed an increase in your book acquisitions during the last few months?

I started back at work halfway though May and it was a rough transition. Not just from not having worked for so long but just the whole slew of new protocols and regulations to get used to. Who knew how good I had it when I didn’t have to wear so much PPE? I feel like I constantly have a bit of a headache from all the things hanging off of my face/head/ears and it’s just hard. I am sad at the loss of time I had for writing, for cooking, for doing things I love (plus Animal Crossing? HA. My poor non-terraformed rural island.) But I am trying to find my balance again and finding time to write and have time to blog as well. Key word: trying. πŸ˜‰

Fitness Front:

Well, like I mentioned above, I decided to do a crazy running challenge because I could! The Yeti Ultra 24 hr challenge was worth it though and I have zero regrets! Despite all the times I muttered that I did during those 24 hours! πŸ˜› A full recap of that will be up on the blog next week!

I absolutely had to sign up for this virtual race because the medal is amazing and also – HAMILTON. But, of course! I ran this 17.76K (about 11 miles) in my “There’s a million miles I haven’t run” tank that says “BUT JUST YOU WAIT” on the back. πŸ˜€

I’ve been biking more! And I bought a bike! I actually haven’t had a chance to go for an actual longer ride on the new bike yet as we’ve had a really wet past few weekends but I’m hoping to do so this weekend! Fingers crossed. I’m actually not a great biker and it’s just crazy that I feel like it’s easier to run 13 miles than bike it, haha.

How was your May? Tell me what books you’ve been reading or what you’ve been buying lately! How is your summer starting out?
