Monthly Recap: June & July 2020 / Summer Shenanigans

Hey friends! I combined my June and July recaps because wow, things have been crazy busy and I never managed to get my shit together for a June recap so here we are. 😀

Honestly, my June was pretty uneventful – I literally just scrolled through my camera reel to be like, what fun things did I end up doing in June and came up with a blank. All my pictures are of food. HA. So more of the same: baking and cooking. I’ve been excited by the return of the farmer’s markets (with social distancing and strict protocols in place) so all the fresh fruits and veggies are what I look forward to weekly. Which makes me sound so old and boring?? But I swear, the fresh foods are life changing. We did pick strawberries too so my baked goods included some delicious strawberry bars, strawberry and raspberry crumbles and strawberry shortcake!

My husband and I got to hit the trails a few times, once for a day hike and then a backpacking trip around the 4th of July! We typically hike way more than we have been this year since the trails were closed until June so man, that first long backpacking trip felt real rough. It was a lot of fun though, so nice to get away from work and the world and everything.

We also got to do a drive-in movie and that was so great!! It’s at a place that usually does outdoor movies during the summer and switched to drive-in due to covid. It worked so well! We saw Dirty Dancing, brought our homemade popcorn and got food truck food and it was fantastic. Love that movie and the experience was so fun.

A book set in a city that has hosted the Olympics Last Christmas in Paris

A bildungsroman ✓ I feel like a lot of YA books fall into this category (where the main character goes through growth essentially) but Dear Martin in particular

A book recommended by a blog/podast/online book club ✓ My book club chose So You Want To Talk About Race and while I never ended up discussing it with them (I’m so bad about this), I really enjoyed the book! Lots of stuff to discuss for sure in this one.

A book on a subject you know nothing about ✓ Shadow on the Crown : I know nothing about Emma of Normandy or this period of medieval England! I don’t think I’ve ever studied this period in any history class and it’s fascinating!

NEW VIEW: Read a friends to lovers new adult romance – The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen. Loving the Ivy Years so much and so happy I’m essentially binging through all the Sarina Bowen books this year!

THE OFFICE: Read a romance where the couple meets at their place of work – Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren. I feel like this is one of those books everyone read already and I’m glad I finally did too despite the mixed reviews, haha. I actually enjoyed it!

Fitness Front:

Well, I sprained my ankle (lightly) in July on a super easy, super short day hike where I simply just stepped and rolled my ankle. It was on a perfectly flat even stretch of ground, too! Ugh. Thankfully it wasn’t too bad and after some rest, it’s getting better quickly. I had to take a few weeks off running and did some biking instead for some low impact work.

Indoor bouldering is back!! Our gym opened at the end of July with a reservation system, strict measures in place and masks required. I felt pretty safe especially given the limited amount of people they have per area in the gym. But IT WAS REAL ROUGH climbing after FOUR months away, let me tell you. My hands and feet were throbbing after that first day. My skin has adjusted a bit more now and my feet don’t complain quite as much being stuffed into my climbing shoes so we’re getting there! My pull up strength tanked though, as expected, but I’m working my way back slowly.

How is your summer going? I refuse to think that fall is around the corner so I’m still holding on to all things summer! Tell me what you’ve been reading and doing!
